Give to a Specific Campus or Initiative
UVG-Altiplano Campus
Located in Guatemala’s Western Highlands where poverty and lack of opportunity predominate, UVG-Altiplano promotes rural development through both formal and informal educational programming. Each year approximately 10,000 individuals participate in some form of education: high school to college bridge programs, undergraduate and graduate degree programs, teacher training certificate programs, English language courses, adult education and one-day workshops. UVG-Altiplano also hosts bilingual preparatory education. Students are predominantly Maya. A very modest investment yields tremendous transformation.

UVG-South Campus
Located near Santa Lucia Cotzumalguapa on Guatemala’s Pacific Coast, UVG-South is in the heart of sugar producing country. Academics offered are similar to those at Altiplano. Students are mostly Latinx Guatemalans of mixed Maya-Spanish heritage. A gift to UVG-South helps fund scholarships to create education opportunities that these students might not otherwise be able to pursue.

UVG-Central Campus
Among the top universities in Central America, UVG’s main campus in Guatemala City grants Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, Licenciatura, and Master’s Degrees. With a strong focus on engineering and applied sciences, it is educating Guatemala’s future innovators, problem solvers, entrepreneurs, and educators. A gift to the Central Campus is a gift to Guatemalan society.

UVG-San Andres Semetabaj (UVG-SAS), Mack Family Initiative
Donations to UVG-SAS and the Mack Family Initiative fund scholarships for the town’s youth to attend the UVG-Altiplano campus as well as on-going projects including the archeological exploration of the pre-classic period on-site ruins (approximately 600 BC), ecological and environmental community education programs, and practicums for students studying water and land use.

Teacher Training Program
Most teachers in Guatemalan public elementary schools do not have any post-secondary education. UVG has been a pioneer in teacher-training, offering the only Mayan/Spanish language elementary education program in Central America. Teachers in Guatemala earn very little, and tuition at UVG for the Profesorado program is beyond their means. A gift of a scholarship for these teachers will make a lasting difference in the lives of all the students they teach thereafter.

Women at UVG
Research by the World Bank and other private studies suggests that the education of women – with its enormous multiplier effects on the health and development of children – is the single best investment a country can make in its future. Educating women outstrips the return on any alternative use of resources. UVG is at the forefront of this trend: women currently make up 56% of its student body. Support a female student at UVG today.

Lake Atitlán Research Center (UVG-LAC), Altiplano Campus
The Lake Atitlán basin is a closed watershed in the volcanic highlands of Guatemala. A UNESCO biosphere reserve and the deepest lake in Central America, Lake Atitlán is an essential resource, providing water for drinking and irrigation. Serious problems of water pollution, soil erosion, and forest loss are prevalent and have led to large-scale algae blooms caused by cyanobacteria. Funds donated to UVG-LAC help support the ongoing monitoring, evolution, and treatment of the Lake’s watershed and student practicums and assistantships working in the lab as part of their education.

Philip Herrera Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund
Philip Herrera was a great friend to and a benefactor of UVG and served as a long-time board member of USFUVG. Upon his passing in 2008, family and friends began the endowed fund that bears his name to support the scholarship program at UVG-Altiplano. In the first five years, 17 scholarships were awarded to 9 students. Many more have followed suit. UVG invests and manages the Philip Herrera Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund.
